The Changing Face of Prostitution
by Amy Eddings
NEW YORK, NY March 14, 2008 —The fall of Gov. Eliot Spitzer placed a spotlight on the world of prostitution.
Times have changed - the red light district is virtual and arrangements are made via email and telephone.
But the stories of the prostitutes, what they make, the social stigma and the danger they face hasn't really changed.
Joining us now is Sudhir Venkatesh. He's a professor of sociology at Columbia University and has spent much of the last decade researching the high-end prostitution industry in New York and Chicago.
During the course of his research he's followed more than 400 sex workers and has interviewed more than a hundred of their clients – the "johns." Venkatesh is working on his second book on the subject and he joins us now.
