Famed Hawks Expecting
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY March 13, 2008 —Bird watchers say a celebrated hawk couple is poised to produce chicks for the first time since a 2004 furor over their Fifth Avenue nest.
New York City Audubon Society spokeswoman Sandy Fiebelkorn tells the Daily News that the red-tailed hawks - Pale Male and Lola - are nurturing at least one egg in their Upper East Side nest. Any hatchlings should emerge around April 15.
Seven chicks hatched between 2002 and 2004, when residents of the East 74th St. building had the nest removed. They said the hawks were creating a health hazard by dropping animal parts.
The nest was restored after an outcry from birders and wildlife officials.
