Spitzer Huddles at Home as Pressure to Resign Mounts

by Andrea Bernstein

NEW YORK, NY March 11, 2008 —All day Tuesday the governor remained huddled with his family and close advisers in his Fifth Avenue apartment. Even some top aides were not informed of his plans.

But shortly before the business day ended his communications director issued a tersely worded e-mail "nothing today." No reason was given for the delay.

The Democratic governor is under pressure from several newspapers and even some in his own party to resign. His detractors say the one-time Time magazine "crusader of the year” is hopelessly hobbled by his transgressions.

Meantime, Lt. Governor David Paterson's aides have been quietly preparing for a possible transition.

For WNYC, I'm Andrea Bernstein.
