NEW YORK, NY March 12, 2008 —Closing arguments are expected today in the trial of Cesar Rodriguez.

The 29-year old is charged with abusing and murdering his 7-year-old stepdaughter, Nixzmary Brown.

Yesterday, defense attorneys had hoped to get testimony from a psychologist who'd examined Rodriguez's wife following her arrest in the same case, but a judge denied that request because the testimony would've been hearsay.

The defense wanted the witness to counter testimony that Nixzmary was sexually abused.

The defense has called for a mistrial and says the prosecution is withholding evidence. That motion was also rejected.

Nixzmary's mother also faces murder charges. Her trial begins once this one concludes.
