Moments Leading up to Times Square Bomb Caught on Tape
by Amy Eddings
NEW YORK, NY March 06, 2008 —Caught on tape -- a person getting off a bike around 3:40 this morning and heading toward the military recruiting station in Times Square, moments before a small bomb was detonated there.
REPORTER: Police released footage from a private security camera that showed the person cycling away, and the flash and smoke from the explosion. Police commissioner Ray Kelly says the NYPD may have found the bike.
KELLY: The bicycle was found at Madison and 38th in the trash; a 10 speed, in good shape, it looked new, caused superintendent to be suspicious, that's when they called 911.
REPORTER: Kelly says the bomb was a green metal ammunition box packed with explosive powder. He says it's too soon to tell whether the explosion is linked to similar incidents at the British Embassy in 2005 and the Mexican Consulate in 2007.
This morning's explosion caused minor damage to the recruitment center, and temporarily halted traffic and subway service. No one was injured.
