New Help for Victims of Domestic Abuse

by Fred Mogul

NEW YORK, NY March 06, 2008 —REPORTER: Victims of domestic abuse can go to criminal or family court to get restraining orders.

Family court is an easier option for many people, but it's not an option for gay couples or unmarried straight couples living together.

Now, a proposed city law would open up a different civil court for abuse victims who don't want to enter criminal proceedings.

Council Speaker Christine Quinn -

QUINN: This bill will make Supreme Court an avenue that domestic partners can take to get orders of protection. An avenue that we believe more people will use, an avenue that we believe will be quicker.

REPORTER: The bill has Mayor Bloomberg's backing. Quinn will submit it to the City Council next week, and it is expected to pass easily.
