Senate Approves Paid Leave Bill
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY March 04, 2008 —A measure that would allow workers in New Jersey to take paid leave to care for a sick relative or newborn is 1 step closer to becoming law.
The State Senate approved the bill by a 22-16 vote yesterday.
It now heads to the Assembly, which is expected to consider it in the coming weeks.
Governor Corzine has said he would sign the measure if it gets to his desk.
Officials say the leave would be paid through a payroll deduction that legislative officials estimate would cost workers $33 per year.
Workers who take leave would get 66% of their salary, up to $502 per week.
