Kelly Says Al Qaeda Again Poses a Threat Inside US

by Bob Hennelly

NEW YORK, NY March 01, 2008 —Despite years of combat in both Afghanistan and Iraq, intelligence experts say Al Qaeda has reconstituted itself sufficiently to pose a threat within the United States. WNYC's Bob Hennelly has more.

REPORTER: Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says thanks to the safe haven of the unincorporated Pakistani frontier, Al Qaeda has been able to attract Western recruits to train in use of improvised explosive devices.

KELLY: Those individuals, some of them have completed that training and left the area. So certainly Western Europe and the United States have to be concerned about that.

REPORTER: Early this month Admiral Michael McConnell, the director of National Intelligence testified before Congress that there has been an influx of Western recruits into the tribal region of Pakistan since mid 2006.
