Radio Rookies: Legal Emancipation

by Jordan Teklay

NEW YORK, NY February 25, 2008 —Today, WNYC begins its Radio Rookies series "Out on My Own: Stories from Teens Living Away from their Parents."

Teenagers are famous for getting into conflicts with their families over independence. Occasionally, that tension even leads to a separation of some kind - such as moving in with a relative or going into foster care.

But Radio Rookie Jordan Teklay didn't want to be a part of anybody else's family. When the situation with his mom became unbearable, he sought his freedom through the courts and became a legally emancipated minor.

OUTRO: Jordan's story was produced by Melissa Robbins and edited by Marianne McCune. The latest Radio Rookies series was held in partnership with The Door in lower Manhattan. On Wednesday, we'll hear from a Radio Rookie who grew up in foster care and is about to "age out" of the system.
