Philharmonic Ready for North Korea Visit
by Allison Lichter
NEW YORK, NY February 24, 2008 —Officials in North Korea are tearing down the anti-American posters that normally line the streets of the capital Pyongyang in preparation for the New York Philharmonic's unprecedented visit.
REPORTER: At a press conference Sunday, music director Lorin Maazel announced the possibility that the Philharmonic's concert in Pyongyang would be broadcast on Korean radio, in addition to a television broadcast. WNYC's John Schaefer is travelling with the orchestra. He says the radio broadcast is something the Philharmonic would really like to see happen.
SCHAEFER: and which, given the penetration, or lack of penetration of television sets in the market, would be a much bigger deal than the actual telecast.
REPORTER: The concert in Pyongyang takes place this Tuesday. WNYC will broadcast the concert starting at 8 o'clock on Tuesday evening, on 93.9 WNYC.
