"Be Kind Rewind" Opens Today
by Allison Lichter
NEW YORK, NY February 22, 2008 —REPORTER: The director, Frenchman Michel Gondry is a master of low-tech movies - often building his sets from cardboard and trash.
That do-it-yourself ethos drives the plot of "Be Kind Rewind."
When all the VHS tapes at an independent video store are erased, the two clerks decide to make homemade versions of the films - an oddball mix from the 80s and 90s.
Gondry says the movies he references in his film were partly inspired by his friendship with comedian Dave Chappelle.
GONDRY: When I told him about this project he said, "You have to do Driving Miss Daisy, you want to show how racist it is." Boyz in the Hood, was his suggestion. Overall, I tried to imagine what people would come and ask for.
REPORTER: Gondry also created a special exhibit at the Deitch Projects art gallery downtown, where visitors can make their own movies.
