Writers' Guild Considers Tentative Agreement with Producers
by Brian Zumhagen
NEW YORK, NY February 10, 2008 —New York-based entertainment writers are optimistic that they can end their three-month-old strike and get back to work this week.
REPORTER: Writers' Guild East president Michael Winship says union members are reacting positively to a tentative deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers:
WINSHIP: The general sense of it is that we are pretty much done in the sense that not all the i's have been dotted and all the t's have been crossed, but we are basically there.
REPORTER: The governing boards of the Writers Guild East and West are meeting Sunday to decide whether to authorize a membership vote to ratify the agreement. The deal would provide union jurisdiction over projects created for the Internet. It also sets flat fees and residuals for programs streamed or downloaded online, a central demand of the union. The deal also includes a special "made for new media" provision covering New York writers who produce material that's distributed online.
