Tobacco - Bad News for World Governments
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY February 08, 2008 —Tobacco use killed 100 million people in the 20th century and could kill another 1 billion this century, if governments don't take steps to reduce it - that's according to the World Health Organization.
This includes banning tobacco advertising, raising tobacco taxes and adopting smoke free laws.
In a report released yesterday, the WHO found that governments collect 500 times more money in tobacco taxes each year than they spend on anti tobacco programs.
China and India account for 40% of the world's smokers.
Mayor Bloomberg's philanthropic foundation donated $2 million to help produce the report.
