New Domino Plan Criticized
Preservationists are unhappy with a developer's plan to add 5 more stories to the Domino sugar refinery in Williamsburg.
by Matthew Schuerman
NEW YORK, NY February 06, 2008 —REPORTER: The extra floors could add 60 or 70 luxury apartments to the landmarked building that would help pay for the expensive renovation.
It would also pay for hundreds of affordable apartments elsewhere in the New Domino project.
After a hearing at the Landmarks Preservation Commission yesterday, Lisa Kersavage of the Municipal Art Society said a rooftop addition might be acceptable, but not this one.
KERSAVAGE: The size of the addition is about half the size of the existing buildings. So you're taking half of the building and adding it on top, but in glass and with mechanicals.
REPORTER: Several Landmarks commissioners said they would be willing to approve a smaller addition.
