Anti-Terror Funding For New York Area
The Department of Homeland Security increases funding to the region
by Amy Eddings
NEW YORK, NY February 01, 2008 —An additional $153 million is being earmarked this year to secure the subway and commuter rail lines.
The New York area will get 45% of the total national allocation for mass transit security. Governor Spitzer says the money will go for personnel, emergency preparedness drills, biochemical detectors, and more surveillance cameras.
SPITZER: The fact we will have video, be able to act in real time, make a big difference in security for our transportation venues.
HOST: Elected officials and law enforcement authorities have long complained that New York City wasn't getting its fair share of homeland security funding.
Officials say they were more successful this year because their application was made jointly by several law enforcement and transit agencies across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
