Pier 40 Vote Delayed
by Kathleen Horan
NEW YORK, NY February 01, 2008 —REPORTER: The circus isn't coming to Pier 40 just yet.
A vote on the 2 redevelopment proposals for the Houston Street park has been delayed until March.
One plan would provide a permanent home for Cirque de Soleil. The other would mostly leave the pier as is, only adding playing fields and parking.
Diana Taylor, chair of the Hudson River Park Trust, says vote was delayed because none of the proposals strike the right balance yet.
TAYLOR: You have people who don't want anything to change on the one side, and the park that needs people to come in there on the other side to throw off the revenue that's needed to maintain the park. So hopefully, between those 2 things, we will be able to find a compromise.
REPORTER: Taylor says any future development will probably receive some kind of tax-exempt financing, in addition to private contributions to offset some of the cost.
