Fraud at West Side Marina
by Bob Hennelly
NEW YORK, NY January 31, 2008 —REPORTER: The 79th Street Boat Basin has been a landmark since Robert Moses created it in 1937.
But, according to City Comptroller Bill Thompson, it may also been the scene of a fraud that has cost the city tens of thousands of dollars.
Thompson says the West Side marina lacks basic fiscal controls.
THOMPSON: And than you go to other customers. Individuals who were parking there customers who have docked their boats there and you talk to them about how much they have paid and that doesn't match up with what the City has received. That's why I am talking about fraud.
REPORTER: The Parks Department says it adopted most of the comptroller's recommendations, but denies the fraud.
Since Thompson's audit, the Parks Department no longer accepts cash at the Boast Basin.
