Frontrunners Begin Local TV Campaigns

The time has come for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to spend large chunks of all that cash they've raised over the last year.

NEW YORK, NY January 30, 2008 —With less than a week before more than 20 states hold their primaries, both candidates are launching TV ads in New York, one of the most expensive markets in the US.

WNYC's Fred Mogul has more.

In an ad titled "Nuestra Amiga," Hillary Clinton is shown greeting Latino crowds and sitting on a sofa with a concerned family, nodding earnestly and yes, kissing a smiling baby.

A voice declares "Hillary is our friend and will help us." The 30-second Spanish language ad will air in California, Arizona, New York and Connecticut.

Obama's ad features Caroline Kennedy and shows alternating images of Obama and JFK.

KENNEDY: People always tell me how my father inspired them. I feel that same excitement now.

The Obama ad will run in New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and on national cable.

Obama is also running a Spanish-language TV ad, so far only out west. It features a Hispanic Congressman from Chicago declaring that Obama sympathizes with Latinos, because he knows "what it feels like being used as a scapegoat just because of our origin and last name."

For WNYC, I'm Fred Mogul.
