Corzine Pushes Ahead With Toll Plan
by Bob Hennelly
NEW YORK, NY January 30, 2008 —Governor Corzine will be in Bergen County this morning.
He continues to press his controversial plan to raise tolls to retire billions of dollars in state debt. But as WNYC's Bob Hennelly reports, it's still an uphill climb.
First, the good news for Governor Corzine - the state's Chamber of Commerce came out in support of his plan.
The business group hails the governor's plan as comprehensive because it would cut the state's $32 billion debt in half while also funding billions in long overdue infrastructure repairs and improvements. It also would keep current spending flat.
The bad news is in the latest polling from the Fairleigh Dickinson University's Public Mind survey. It finds that by close to a 2-1 margin voters are not buying his plan.
Neither are some members of his own party. Senate President Dick Codey says he wants the state lottery to be leased in order to reduce toll hikes on the Turnpike and Parkway.
For WNYC, I'm Bob Hennelly.
