City Council Members Anxious Over Gov's Budget Proposal
by Bob Hennelly
NEW YORK, NY January 23, 2008 —The head of the city council, Speaker Christine Quinn, says she's troubled by Governor Spitzer's proposed budget, saying it short-changes the city.
QUINN: The state budget could leave city potentially with at least 300 million if not more less than what we had expected. Particularly troubling in area of education.
REPORTER: The governor's budget boosts city school aid by 7 percent, but its $100 million shy of what he had promised, under an agreement to settle a long-standing lawsuit. Quinn's concerns come on the eve of Mayor Bloomberg's budget speech.
The mayor has said he'll propose extending property tax rebates and cuts, but only if Albany comes through with enough state funds.
