Fresh Start for Calorie Count Fight
City officials are reviving a plan to force fast-food chains to post calorie counts for their food right on the menu.
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY January 22, 2008 —The Board of Health plans to vote today on the requirement.
They hope the information will shock New Yorkers into eating healthier.
The Board of Health first passed a similar rule last year, but a federal judge struck it down because it failed to apply to both restaurants that volunteered information on ingredients and those that didn't.
The new regulation would take effect March 31st.
Fast-food companies have argued against the rule. They say the calorie counts will clutter menus and irritate customers who don't necessarily want to know.
