LIRR Prepares for Possible Amtrak Strike
Long Island Rail Road riders will be steered to several different subway stations to get to and from Manhattan if Amtrak workers strike January 30th.
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY January 17, 2008 —The LIRR relies on Amtrak facilities at Penn Station.
If there's a strike, it would direct passengers to use several different subway stations in Brooklyn and Queens, so that the transfer hub at Jamaica Station in Queens wouldn't be dangerously overwhelmed.
Plans also envision a special subway line running between the Sutpin Boulevard-Archer Avenue stop in Queens and Herald Square in Manhattan.
There has never been a strike in Amtrak's 36-year history, and an 11th hour deal or Congressional intervention could well forestall one this time.
