Body Snatcher Pleads Guilty

by WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY January 16, 2008 —Prosecutors say he made millions of dollars by carving up hundreds of bodies and selling the parts for dental implants, hip replacements and other procedures across the US.

Michael Mastromarino will plead guilty to charges of orchestrating the dissections at a Brooklyn funeral home.

The bodies were looted without permission or proper screening for diseases, and an untold number of patients were unknowingly exposed to infection.

Mastromarino was charged with enterprise corruption, body stealing, opening graves, unlawful dissection and forgery.

Also charged were a Brooklyn mortician, Joseph Nicelli and 2 so-called "cutters," Lee Cruceta and Christopher Aldorasi.

Mastromarino, who remains behind bars, faces 18-54 years in prison.
