Deadly Fall in SoHo
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY January 15, 2008 —REPORTER: A crane accident at a Trump hotel-condo tower under construction in SoHo sent a worker plummeting more than 40 stories to his death and injured 3 other people.
Yesterday's accident occurred as workers were pouring concrete onto wood forms and the forms collapsed.
Buildings Commissioner Patricia Lancaster says debris is being removed from the site and an investigation is currently underway.
LANCASTER: This is clearly unacceptable and the rest of the job will be shutdown until the construction manager tells us how the work will proceed in a safe manner.
REPORTER: Construction at the site is being overseen by Bovis Lend Lease, the same contractor in charge of dismantling the former Deutsche Bank building that caught fire last August, killing 2 firefighters.
Bovis says it will also investigate what went wrong.
