5,000th Student Graduates From "Learning to Work" Program
A program tailored to the needs of the city's older high school students celebrates its 5,000th graduate this month.
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY January 15, 2008 —REPORTER: "Learning to Work" was developed 2 years ago for students at risk of not completing high school.
The program includes personalized attention and work internships.
JoEllen Lynch is with the Department of Education's Office of Multiple Pathways.
LYNCH: The students are doing more in the Learning to Work schools than they ever said they did before. They're spending more time on their education, they're spending more time on their future.
So we know if we build relevant schools for them, they'll really try to complete it and they'll do best for themselves.
REPORTER: According to the DOE, older, under-credited students are 3 times more likely to graduate if they're placed in a smaller program instead of a traditional high school.
