Disabled Demand Improved Accessibility
Advocates for disabled transit riders have released a report on how to improve accessibility in the city's transit system.
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY January 14, 2008 —REPORTER: Councilman Eric Gioia, the chair of the City Council's Investigations Committee, outlined recommendations for the subways and buses, commuter rail lines, taxis, and the Access-A-Ride paratransit system.
GIOIA: Every single Acces-A-Ride should have GPS. It shouldn't take you 4 hours to get from the Bronx to downtown New York for a doctor's appointment.
Second, the lifts on buses should be checked everyday. And, there needs to be an early warning system when the elevators and escalators are out in the subways.
REPORTER: Gioia says the recommendations came from disabled people from all 5 boroughs, and can be implemented easily at relatively low cost.
