National Network Prepared for Bloomberg

Though Mayor Bloomberg insists he's not running for president, "Draft Mike" activists across the US are collecting thousands of signatures to get Bloomberg on the ballot.

NEW YORK, NY January 11, 2008 —In Virginia, the "Draft Bloomberg" vehicle is an existing party - the Independent Greens.

That effort is led by Carey Campbell, an accountant who says he's paying $1,000 a week out of his pocket to pay for a full-time professional petitioner to travel the state to ensure the effort gets 20,000 signatures, double what's required.

All told, he says there are now 45 state chairs like him nationwide.

Meanwhile, here in New York, the state's Independence Party already has a ballot line that its chairman Frank Mackay hopes will carry Mayor Bloomberg's name in November.

And on the internet, there are several independent sites fanning the draft including Unite For Mike that will take MasterCard, Visa, or American Express. For WNYC, I'm Bob Hennelly.
