Sounding Off on the Subways
A top transit official wants all New York City subway stations to have public address systems within "the next couple of years.''
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY January 11, 2008 —NYC Transit President Howard Roberts Jr. says 86 stations - almost 1 in every 5 - currently don't have sound systems.
He wants to fill in those gaps so officials can make announcements to all 468 stations station from a single control room.
Roberts isn't specifying the potential cost of the project. He says he's working to line up money for it.
Transit managers have said that usually, sound systems have only been installed as part of major upgrades to various stations.
