New Jersey Legislators Express Skepticism Over Toll Hike
by Bob Hennelly
NEW YORK, NY January 08, 2008 —Governor Corzine is facing some stiff opposition in the New Jersey Legislature to his plan to hike highway tolls 50 percent, starting in 20-10, as a way to tackle the state's chronic budget problems.
REPORTER: Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean Jr. calls it "the brashest gimmick of all."
KEAN: And now gov no matter what he calls it borrow another 30 40 bill dollars, paid by new road tax on heard working citizens of this state.
REPORTER: Some of Corzine's fellow Democrats are equally opposed, including the Assembly Transportation Committee chairman, who believes transportation assets should be used solely for transportation projects. But Corzine told lawmakers the only other option would be major tax increases, and budget cuts.
