Violence Down at City Jails
Safety has increased in the city's jails as violent crime among inmates continues to plummet.
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY January 07, 2008 —The Department of Correction says slashings and stabbings dropped 50%, from 44 in 2006 to 19 in 2007 - the greatest single-year decline since reliable tracking of inmate violence became available in 1995.
Commissioner Martin Horn says there were more than 1,000 slashings and stabbings in the city's jails when tracking began.
Horn says crime is also down in other key areas, such as serious assaults. He says there were no inmate homicides for the 3rd consecutive year.
