Corzine Prepares to Fight Over Tolls
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY January 07, 2008 —Boosting tolls on the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike is the centerpiece of Governor Corzine's plans to repair the state's finances.
But, it's going to be an uphill battle for the governor to sell the idea to Garden State residents.
Corzine's expected to announce his plans for the toll roads during tomorrow's State of the State address. The money raised from higher tolls would be used to pay off state debt and for transportation projects, such as fixing bridges.
Many residents say they would support a toll increase if they knew the money raised would definitely be used to pay off debt, but many doubt that would happen.
