Charities Hope for Rise in Giving
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY December 27, 2007 —REPORTER: Many charities receive their largest donations during this time of year - between Christmas and tax time.
So far as the entire span of 2007, non-profit organizations have no official numbers yet.
Richard Jolly, of the Giving USA Foundation, says he's surprised that year after year, it's individual donors who are responsible for the bulk of the gifts.
JOLLY: About 75% of it from individuals, another 8% in the form of bequests, certainly foundation and corporate giving, very important. But it only makes up for about 17% of the total number given on an annual basis.
REPORTER: Jolly says there's no indication that charity donations have decreased this year, despite some volatility in the markets and the sub-prime lending crisis.
Last year, a record $295 billion was donated to charity.
