Different Ways to Mark Christmas in New York

What do you do when the city is shut down for a holiday you don't celebrate?

by WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY December 26, 2007 —REPORTER: It's a well-known, unofficial tradition for Jews to fill the city's Chinese restaurants and movie theaters on Christmas.

We found Elise and Ari Beliak at Buddha Bodai on Mott Street, which is not only vegetarian, but kosher too.

ELISE BELIAK: Let's see, what did we have? Things that they call beef and chicken but you know, it's all tofu. It was all good.

ARI BELIAK: We still stayed away from the pork.

ELISE: We still stayed away from the pork. Although, we had the shrimp dumplings.

ARI: We did have the shrimp dumplings.

REPORTER: When asked if he would participate in the unofficial tradition this year, Mayor Bloomberg said no - he ate dinner with friends last night.
