2,500 Hungry Expected at Brooklyn Feast
While some New Yorkers have left town for vacation and others are enjoying a not-so-white Christmas in the city, some residents will spend the day volunteering.
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY December 25, 2007 —REPORTER: Later today, at the Prospect Park YMCA, an estimated 2,500 hungry New Yorkers will sit down for a multi-course dinner, served by more than 200 volunteers.
Lee Perlman, a hospital administrator, is the event's organizer.
PERLMAN: The event has kind of been a tradition in downtown Brooklyn for almost two decades. One of the unfortunate things about it is that folks who come for one year, usually also have a need next year.
REPORTER: Perlman says in addition to the meal, families will receive gifts and food packages. Dinner, served the Prospect Park YMC-, begins at 11:30 this morning and continues through the afternoon, until 4 p.m.
