Uncertain Outcome for Family Leave Bill
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY December 24, 2007 —The fate of legislation that would make New Jersey the 3rd state to let workers take paid family leave remains uncertain.
The measure - which would let employees take up to 10 weeks of paid leave to care for a sick relative or newborn child - advanced through two Senate committees earlier this year after lengthy debate.
But it's since stalled, mostly due to concerns raised by business groups. And if it's not approved before the legislative session ends January 8th, supporters would have to start the process all over again.
The leave would be paid through a charge against weekly wages that legislative officials estimate would cost workers about $1 per week. Workers who take leave would get 2/3's of their salary, up to $502 per week.
