Inspectors Keep An Eye on New Jersey Toys

by WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY December 24, 2007 —Consumer Affairs inspectors in New Jersey have taken a proactive approach to toy safety this season.

They're conducting random tests for lead inside stores and spot-checking shelves to be sure recalled items are not still being sold.

But they're not alone. As recalls mount and consumers grow more wary about buying toys, states such as New York, Connecticut, Vermont, Illinois and California are also taking aggressive measures to ensure toy safety.

A spokesman for the Public Interest Research Group, a consumer protection group in Washington, says it's important for states to be diligent when it comes to toy safety.
