Has Illness Cast a Shadow on Presidential Campaign?

by Andrea Bernstein

NEW YORK, NY December 21, 2007 —Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani's recent illness has cast doubt on his weekend campaign schedule in New Hampshire. WNYC's Andrea Bernstein has more.

With the first-in-the nation caucuses and primaries starting right after New Years, the numbers of days that candidates can actually stump is dwindling. But Giuliani's recent bout with flu-like symptoms has caused him to put off his campaign events for today. And a full weekend of meeting New Hampshire voters has been put on hold while the campaign decides how extensive a schedule the former Mayor will undertake.

Unlike in Iowa, Giuliani has stumped hard in New Hampshire. His campaign says its not expecting a New Hampshire victory, but a serious loss there could hurt the sense of inevitability his campaign hopes to convey. In 2000, Giuliani dropped out of the U.S. Senate race against Hillary Clinton after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. He was successfully treated.

For WNYC, I'm Andrea Bernstein.
