Judge Fights for Pay Increase
New York's top judge, Judith Kaye, has made one more plea with Albany lawmakers to approve a pay raise for judges.
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY December 20, 2007 —REPORTER: Kaye says she'll file a lawsuit if the increase isn't approved, but that she'd rather avoid this if possible.
KAYE: We're now on the first day of the 10th year that Judges have absolutely no salary adjustment. So, I wanted to say that's pretty shabby - don't you think so? We want to get great judges, we want to attract the best people, we want to keep them.
REPORTER: Governor Spitzer says he supports a salary hike for the state's judges, but approval rests with the legislature. Judges currently make an average of $140,000 annually. Their last raise was in 1999.
