Verdict Favors “Sopranos” Creator
A federal jury says David Chase doesn't have to pay a New Jersey man who claimed he helped develop the hit HBO mob series.

NEW YORK, NY December 20, 2007 —After deliberating for just 90 minutes, jurors yesterday dismissed Robert Baer's allegations.
They found the aspiring writer and former prosecutor wasn't owed anything for help he provided while Chase wrote an early draft of the “Sopranos” pilot episode, years before it was picked up.
Chase claimed the proceeding held little suspense for him because his lawyers presented a strong case. He described Baer's lawsuit as a nuisance, saying Baer blamed him for his own failure to be a writer.
Baer, though, claimed a “moral victory” because the jury determined he had performed services for Chase.
