NEW YORK, NY December 19, 2007 —The Brooklyn neighborhood known as DUMBO or "Down Under The Manhattan Bridge" is now the city's 90th historic district.

The Landmark's Preservation Commission has voted unanimously to give special status to DUMBO, once home to a thriving manufacturing center that produced everything from ale to steel wool.

Commission Chairman Robert Tierney says that even though the neighborhood has evolved into a largely residential neighborhood, the status ensures that it retains its unique historic character.

Landmark status limits alterations owners of existing buildings can make and the type and style of new developments.
