Powerful New York Union Backs Senator Clinton
by Fred Mogul
NEW YORK, NY December 14, 2007 —The powerful healthcare workers' union, Local 11-99 of the SEIU, and three other locals, are lining up behind Senator Hillary Clinton, just weeks before the Iowa Caucus.
REPORTER: Many SEIU locals in Iowa, and New Hampshire, have backed Barack Obama or John Edwards instead, so the New York locals are trying to get some mileage out of the timing of the announcement. Local 11-99 president George Gresham says SEIU will mobilize its members for Clinton.
GRESHAM: We can certainly communicate to all of our members urging them in their own individual ways to support the candidate ...do the best job for the members and for the country."
REPORTER: The national SEIU has declined to endorse a primary candidate.
