Public Housing Goes Green

by Lisa Chow

NEW YORK, NY December 07, 2007 —New York City's public housing stock may be greener and more energy efficient in the years to come. The city's housing authority is working in partnership with the federal housing agency and President Clinton's foundation to retrofit its more than 2600 buildings.

REPORTER: Clinton says buildings emit 80 percent of the city's greenhouse gases.

CLINTON: Most of the lights waste most of the heat. A lot of the heat today will escape from this building. If we were here in the summertime, a lot of the airconditioning would escape from the airconditioned rooms in this housing project. Our roofs are inefficient.

REPORTER: The announcement, was made at the Eastchester Community Center in the Bronx. Clinton's foundation will act as a broker between the New York City Housing Authority and energy companies and banks to help replace lighting and heating systems. More than 400,000 people live in public housing in New York City.
