Officials Move to Improve Communication

by Cindy Rodriguez

NEW YORK, NY November 20, 2007 —A building association that represents hundreds of large construction companies says it will begin meeting with the Fire Department once a month to discuss fire safety concerns. In addition, FDNY Chief Sal Cassano, says before a building is constructed or demolished, construction companies will submit fire safety plans to the department.

CASSANO: We'll meet with all the site safety managers and all the tradesmen to explain to them what the department needs to make this a safer operation. so that we'll have any problems worked out before the operation. We think it will be a safer way to do it. We certainly know it will be a better way to do it.

REPORTER: Ever since two firefighters died while attempting to put out a blaze at 130 Liberty Street, the city has been working to improve job site safety. Cassano says the new initiative will help improve accountability at construction sites.
