Spitzer Abandons Plan for Immigrant Drivers Licenses
by Andrea Bernstein
NEW YORK, NY November 14, 2007 —Surrounded by members of New York's Democratic delegation, Governor Elliot Spitzer announced he is abandoning his plan to issue driver licenses to illegal immigrants.
REPORTER: Polls showed the plan was very unpopular and Spitzer said he didn't need a stethoscope to hear the public's heartbeat on the issue. He said the issue was tieing up Albany and he hoped that by moving on legislators would be able to focus on other issues. He also called on the federal government to implement real immigration reform.
SPITZER: We will not forget the issue. We will not forget the problem, rather as you heard this is a clarion call for action on this overwhelming problem.
REPORTER: The Democrats who assembled with Spitzer today in Washington all spoke of how proud they are of him for taking on such a divisive issue. Republicans will no doubt claim victory for forcing the Governor to capitulate.
