Concern over city plan to build schools in contaminated area

by Beth Fertig

NEW YORK, NY November 12, 2007 —Some Bronx residents want the city to conduct an extra review of its plans to build 4 new schools on a former manufacturing site in Mott Haven. WNYC's Beth Fertig has more.

REPORTER: The new schools are going up on a site that previously hosted a rail yard, a service station and a gas plant. The city is already spending 30 million dollars to clean the soil and cover the entire site with a cap. But some community residents also want the city to pay for an independent review of its plans to monitor the cleanup.

About a dozen parents and children held a mock bake sale outside City Hall to publicize their call for the 11 thousand dollar review. Deborah Bryant, who has 2 children attending a school near the construction side, said kids need protection from any potential toxins.

BRYANT: Whether you realize it or not, our children are our future and we need to take care of them

REPORTER: The state is still reviewing the city's plans to monitor the cleanup. Once it does, the public will have 45 days to respond. For WNYC I'm Beth Fertig.
