Giuliani Touts Cancer Survival in Ad
by Andrea Bernstein
NEW YORK, NY October 30, 2007 —Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani is touting having survived prostrate cancer in a new radio ad running in New Hampshire. WNYC's Andrea Bernstein has more.
REPORTER: Trailing former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney in the polls in New Hampshire, Giuliani's making a big play for the state, spending the entire week there, holding a forum on health care, and airing this ad.
GIULIANI: I had prostate cancer, five, six years ago. My chance of surviving prostate cancer, and thank God I was cured of it, in the United States, 82%. My chances of surviving prostate cancer in England, only 44% under socialized medicine.
REPORTER: Those statistics are actually ten years old. The U.K. government's statistics office puts the prostate cancer survival rate at about 74 percent. But Giuliani the numbers to bolster his argument that the best way to bring down health insurance costs is through a 7500 per person tax deduction that will allow people to buy their own plans. Giuliani dropped out of the U.S. Senate race in 2000 after announcing his cancer. For WNYC, I'm Andrea Bernstein.
