Sen. Clinton Focuses on Women Voters

by Andrea Bernstein

NEW YORK, NY October 15, 2007 —Senator Hillary Clinton is in New York City today, kicking off a week's worth of events focused on women voters. WNYC's Andrea Bernstein has more.

REPORTER: Under attack by some of her opponents for policies they say are too right-wing on Iran, Senator Clinton is returning to her base, ginning up support among women voters. Clinton started the week by addressing a packed hotel ballroom at a luncheon for the Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee, a group that supports women running for office in New York State. She described being greeted on the campaign trail by a 90-year old woman.

CLINTON: but as I'm reaching out, shaking hands, a woman grabs my hand and she said I am 95 years old I was born before women could vote, and I'm going to live long enough to see a woman in the white house.

REPORTER: Clinton promised to fight to defend Roe v. Wade and to work for a less conservative supreme court, two issues that generate enthusiasm among democratic women voters. Shortly before her speech, Clinton's top foreign policy advisor held a conference call on a new article the candidate wrote in Foreign Affairs, in which she holds to a tough line on Iran.

For WNYC, I'm Andrea Bernstein.
