8 States Reach Nation’s Largest Environmental Settlement

by Beth Fertig

NEW YORK, NY October 09, 2007 —The federal government's landmark environmental settlement with a power plant company based in Ohio is being praised by officials and environmental advocates as a major victory for New York.

REPOTER: John Walke, clean air director with the Natural Resources Defense Council in Washington, D.C., says the settlement with American Electric Power will improve air quality in New York.

WALKE: The reason is that the power plants that broke the clean air act and reached the settlement today are all upwind of New York State in the Ohio River Valley and West Virginia and Virgina.

REPORTER: The NRDC was a plaintiff in the 8-year-old lawsuit, along with New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and five other states.
