Election Preparations Already Underway

by Bob Hennelly

NEW YORK, NY October 08, 2007 —The next congressional election is more than a year away, but New Jersey Democrats are already readying their efforts to unseat Republican Representatives they believe are vulnerable. WNYC's Bob Hennelly has the report.

Right now, 7 of New Jersey's 13 House seats are held by Democrats. Peter Wooley, director of FDU's Public Mind poll, says shifting demographics give the Democrats the best chance in a generation to pick up 2 seats.

WOOLEY: Now if there's any good year to run for Congress as a Democrat, it's probably going to be a year from now. Because anybody who's wearing the label Republican is going to have some difficulties, unless things dramatically change.

In central Jersey, GOP incumbent Mike Ferguson will face a rematch with Assemblywoman Linda Stender, who lost in 2006 by just a few thousand votes. Down in south Jersey, 12-term GOP conservative incumbent John Saxton faces State Senator John Adler. For WNYC, I'm Bob Hennelly.
