Western Union Criticized for Raising Fees
WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY October 03, 2007 —Western Union is being criticized immigrant advocacy groups for allegedly charging higher fees and inflating exchange rates on international money transfers.
REPORTER: Three local groups are joining others around the nation in a boycott. Janis Rosheuvel, of Families for Freedom, says Western Union should donate money to the communities that give it so much business.
ROSHEUVEL: We want to impress upon Western Union that supporting our loved ones is not just a financial transaction for us. It's also an expression of our love and a necessity for sustaining our families and communities.
REPORTER: A spokesman for Western Union says its prices and exchange rates are based on market trends and are comparable to those of other money transfer companies.
